Have you heard about Medical Tourism? Medical Tourism seems to be a growing industry. I just recently saw a TV segment about it. Essentially, patients are being offered high-tech surgical treatments at off-shore medical facilities, which come with a complete tourism package for postoperative recovery - top-notch medical care & vacation - all for a cost that is less than what the surgery alone would cost in the US.
A hospital in Thailand seems to be the world leader. Surgeons are trained, for the most part, in the US, but then go to staff these resort hospitals. Nursing care is reported to be excellent. Patient rooms are luxury hotel suites. And patients without health insurance are signing up. One interviewer of a quadruple bypass patient was astonished to find that patient had gotten the entire bypass surgical/tourism package for around $5,000 - compare that to what the surgery alone costs here in the United States.
